Interview: Danny Doring & Roadkill
IGN Wrestling's first dual text-audio feature - get your chickens ready for these ECW stars!
June 7, 2000
Danny Doring and Roadkill are two of the most outstanding young stars coming up the ranks in ECW today. Although they started their career as heels, the charismatic "Dastardly One" and 300lb chicken-lover hit a cord somewhere in the fans and have seen their popularity rise tremendously in the last few months. They continue to rise in the ring also; now embroiled in a feud with Da Baldies, they've enlisted the help of former ECW champion Tommy Dreamer for several hard-hitting six-man contests as of late.
IGN Wrestling's Blake Norton caught up with the team recently in Los Angeles, where they were promoting new and upcoming ECW video games for Acclaim.
Norton: How about an interview?
Roadkill: I would, but I only say one thing.
Norton: Just one?
Roadkill: Yup.
Norton: Aw, please!
Roadkill: Sorry man, there's just one thing I say. Chickens.
Norton: I'll tell you what, I'm going to start my tape recorder, and I want you to give me your best "chickens!" right into the microphone here….
Roadkill: (laughing) "CHICKENS!"

Norton: Moving on to Danny Doring here… are you a video games fan?
Doring: Actually I am. I've got all the top systems, like the Playstation, N64, Dreamcast.
Norton: Did you have any involvement in the game?
Doring: Yeah! The new game coming out, Spike Dudley and I did all the moves. All of them were done by the two of us.
Norton: You're getting really over in ECW right now. Are you happy with it?
Doring: I'm extremely happy right now. I'm just happy to be used. The fans got behind us, somewhere.
Norton: I think there's a cult thing going on..
Doring: Yeah. We were bona fide heels for a while. We came out one day, at Anarchy Rules we just came out and the fans were going crazy. We were amazed.
Norton: What do you think your chances are of getting a tag title shot with the Impact Players dissolving?
Doring: Personally, it doesn't really matter. We're feuding with Da Baldies right now, so I don't think we need them. I don't think we need a belt to show we're the best tag team. We feel that we are, we work well with everybody, and we don't need a belt to say it.
Norton: Do you think that working with Tommy Dreamer has increased your profile?
Doring: Tommy Dreamer has been nothing but a… (pauses) dream. He's been great. He, Raven, Shane Douglas, Tazz, Tracey Smothers, all those guys took us under their wings and trained us. I could go on forever. They took all these guys under their wing and trained us. I couldn't thank them enough.
Norton: What's your next goal in ECW?
Doring: Oh, the TV title. I'm very happy in my tag situation right now. But if I had to go singles, that would be my focus.
Norton: What about the WWF and WCW? There's been a lot of guys jumping over there recently.
Doring: I trained at the ECW school. I got my start in ECW. My first match was in ECW. I'm loyal to ECW. I'm very happy here, I'm under contract for another four years, and I have no plans to go anywhere.
Norton: What about Tazz coming in and winning the world title, was that beneficial for the company because of the publicity or bad because of putting focus on the WWF?
Doring: I thought it was great. Mike Awesome, he… he tried to hurt us. We teamed up and turned a negative into a positive. Tazz is an angel, he really is. Tazz coming back was really good for us, because our world title was on Raw and Smackdown.
Norton: The WWF vs. ECW world title match gave the belt a lot of credibility.
Doring: Absolutely. If half of that audience looks at us, we could triple our ratings. That's a positive. I don't think we should make a habit out of it, though, because people start to look at us as… we're strong enough to stand on our own and have our own identity.
Norton: How did you and Roadkill come together?
Doring: We trained together at school... We were classmates. When we started wrestling, there were no matches for us in singles, so we decided to get together and team up. That was two and a half years ago.
Norton: Thanks for your time, we'll talk to you later.
