Interview: Justin Credible
Coming off a big win at Living Dangerously, ECW's Justin Credible shoots with IGN
March 24, 2000
During the last four years, Justin Credible has gone from the jockstrap-for-a-mask wearing "Man of War" Aldo Montoya in the WWF to one of the biggest stars in ECW. He's recently picked up big wins over stars such as Sabu and Tommy Dreamer. At the last ECW Pay Per View, Living Dangerously, he teamed up with tag partner Lance Storm to dispose of both the tandem of Tommy Dreamer & Masato Tanaka and the explosive team of world champ Mike Awesome and former champ Raven. Obviously, the Impact Players, as they're known, are at the top of the food chain right now.
Credible, a long time friend of Shawn Michaels, came down to wrestle for the Texas Wrestling Alliance (Michaels' wrestling promotion in Texas) last week. Right after Credible won the heavyweight championship he handed it to Shawn Michaels. By the end of the night, Michaels announced that he was coming back for one more match. It was right after that that IGN Wrestling's Mike Tavares caught up with the man who calls himself not just the coolest, and not just the best; Justin Credible.
Tavares: Tell us about tonight working with the TWA. Your experience and what you think of them.
Credible: I had a great time working with the TWA. It was a once in a lifetime thing, especially to get in the ring with one of my idols, Shawn Michaels (not in a match against each other - Credible faced Michaels' "archrival" Venom). I thought it was really cool. I thought the fans here in San Antonio were great. I was especially surprised how rowdy and how into everything they were, (they're obviously) big fans of ECW (from the reaction I got). I was really pleasantly surprised. I had a really good time.
Tavares: Yeah, the fans were into the event the entire night. You don't see that at independent shows that often.
Credible: Well, you know I was very surprised. They were up from top to bottom for every match. It was all excitement. We really gave them a great show tonight and I hope the fans will want to come back and support the TWA more.
Tavares: Will we be seeing you back in the TWA?
Credible: As long as Shawn wants me, I'd love to come back.
Tavares: How about other ECW stars coming out here or maybe TWA stars going to ECW?
Credible: That's all possible. It's all in the works. This is the first step in a long process, hopefully in the right direction, which will result in bringing guys back and forth. I know we'd love to bring guys to ECW, including some of his TWA stars. And likewise, I'd like to have some of ECW's stars come to TWA. There's a lot of ironing out and stuff to do. This was the first step in the right direction and we hope to continue it in the future.
Tavares: Sounds good. How about your career in the ECW? How's that going so far?
Credible: It's going awesome. It couldn't be going any better right now. We're the tag team champions, Lance Storm and myself. We're one of the hottest guys on TV in pro wrestling right now, period. I'm just happy to be a part of it. ECW is growing. Quite honestly, we're the number two company in America, which is really exciting because we're beating the hell out of WCW.
Tavares: With all the front office problems they've got.
Credible: It's just great. You know, we're looking forward to taking over in the year 2000 definitively.
Tavares: What about talk that with WCW in decline, the WWF may be jumping over to CBS? USA could be opening up and the whole thing with TNN, what's your opinion on that?
Credible: I think either way we swing it, it will be positive for ECW. Whether we go to USA or stay with TNN, we've proven we're a ratings draw even though TNN has never really put an ad budget behind our program. We've proven that we have a hardcore audience that will tune in regardless of no advertisers, so that's a good sign. If USA sees the fact that we could draw some big numbers for them, then it's a big plus. I think either way, right now ECW stands to benefit from this whole CBS-WWF situation.
Tavares: Any fond memories from WWF and ECW?
Credible: Yeah.
Tavares: Any stories you'd like to share?
Credible: (laughs) Nothing that I can tell, but I have a lot of fond memories. I really had a great time in the WWF. That's where I met Shawn, Scott Hall, Hunter, and all them guys. That's where I learned everything I know about wrestling today, in the WWF. I owe a lot of my success, honestly, to the WWF, the experiences I had there. It was all good and I learned everything I know from (my time in the) WWF.
Tavares: If you had a chance, would you go back to the WWF now?
Credible: No. Not right now. Right now my time and place is in ECW. I don't see that changing anytime soon. Not for a long time.
